Jang Kim's research program
Jang Hyun Kim has his own research program encompassing social network theory, international communication and media, communication technology, political communication online, policy campaign and its effect, public opinion poll, and organizational communication. His recent planning includes health communication research with several colleagues including his wife. *: SSCI or SCI 

 

 

Culture, Identity, and Digital Media - Digital media, with their social and networked nature, changed people's lifestyle and thoughts. What are key factors of the diffusion of digital media contents? What kind of traits are the most influential factors in digital contents consumption? Are virtual communities playing a role of "bridge" in the diffusion and production of digital contents? Recent research themes include online media credibility (Online Information Review*, 2010, forthcoming), meta-analysis of Internet studies 1993-2005 (Open Communication Journal, 2009) 

 


 

 

Social/Semantic Network Analysis  - Jang Kim has conducted social network analysis on a state level, individual level, and organizational level. State level research includes redefining globalization, conflict communication and culture. Globalization has been discussed numerous times by great intelligentias. However, problem lies in the fact that there is no quantitative operationalization, that is, tangible practical definition or description. This is why Jang Kim attempts to develop a model by social network analysis to redefine globalization, and its first outcome was published in Harvard Asia Quarterly, Summer 2005. A majority of Jang Kim's publication is based on social and semantic network analysis.

 

 

Policy Communication and New Media - What is a desirable communication model among government, political party, civil activist groups, and electorates? Jang Kim served as a Public Communication Officer in a Korean government agency from 2000 to 2003. He has taught Political Communication and Campaign course for a long time.

 

 

Diagnosing organizations: Inter and Intra-organizational Communication -  Analyzing group and organizational communication structure with social and semantic network analysis. Evaluating organizational communication may enhance the structure and performance of organization drastically. Publications include  Asian Journal of Communication* (2009). 

 

  

 

 

 

Global Communication and Media - Jang Kim has been studying media worldwide, including Chinese film in US, Korean film and its Hallyu phenomenon, and external (shortwave) broadcasting of Eastern Europe. His research on the Eastern European external broadcasts (EEEBs) is in print by International Communication Bulletin (2007) - An AEJMC journal. Also, the semantic network analysis of media reports by Globe and Mail and New York Times about Sudan's Darfur conflict was published in the Harvard International Journal of Press/Politics* (2007). His other publications include International Interactions*  (2007) and Journal of International Communication (2008).

 

 

New Media Production - Jang Kim has been using computer technology more than 20 years and utilized such technological understanding for the duties of Korean government agency's Public Communication Officer position. He has two software programming and information seeking licenses, "Minor" completion in Informatics graduate courses. Also he has been expertised in online/phone polls, Internet cinema, and online government interface.
